MY STORY

My Story:

My inspiration to paint evolved early in childhood and has forever been in my heart and soul.

With the opportunity to live abroad in Mexico and Indonesia and travel the world my horizons were  broadened. Our world, is surrounded by water and it has become a main theme for my work. Water comes to us in all shapes, forms and energies.  It was thrilling to  study and experience the light, colour and the atmosphere in different countries and how it reflected on the waters.  Landscapes and florals are also intriguing and find their way into my collections.  The ability  to see beyond my world was invaluable. Painting is my world away from the world and each series take on their own life.

My years were spent drawing, studying art and art history in Greece, Italy, England, Mexico and Indonesia.  The thrill of visiting as many art galleries and museums as possible was a challenge I enjoyed.

My painting method is traditional oil application.  It is enhanced with layering to create texture and/or atmosphere.  Depth is very important to me in my paintings. When needed, mediums for a painting will be added.

The use of brushes, a palette knife and my hands to work with mixed media and oil paint allow me to dive into my paintings. Expressing impressionism with hints of semi-abstract is my stance.  I give my all behind each stroke, and that is what encourages me to continuously paint.

Life for me, has been a long and often difficult journey to be a painter.  Painting is an escape where I create my own world and I am most grateful.

Artist review by Michael Hanna, Artist and on-line Gallery owner, USA

"Darlene Winfield captures the essences and nature of painting through her raw yet elegant brushwork, refined compositions, and personal contemporary colour palette.  The pond series remains a commentary on contemporary aesthetics, giving a fresh composed breath to the reflection of nature and humanities' relationship with our environment.  The contemporary painter has a duty to imbue imagination into the distracted mind of the post-modern audience.  While many artists focus on concepts and technique, Winfield takes a lesson in history by reevaluating paint as a force of nature within itself.  The loose brushwork and cropped composition reveal a value to which high aesthetics need not be diverged by distractions and illusions.  Paint, surface, the mark of the tool will never become obsolete that to vibrant, fresh painters such as Darlene Winfield.  Winfield's unique brushwork remains a force to be reckoned with, combined with the complex colour palette and focused composition, the paintings are a requirement for the refined contemporary eye."

Testimonials

Seven years ago I was looking for some original landscape art to enhance the lakeside home I had just built.  I wanted a classic impressionist, Canadian feeling.  At a local festival, Darlene was showing some absolutely stunning works.  I had been considering the work of several artist but Darlene had captured more of the wild nature of northern Ontario than any I had seen.  I now enjoy five Winfield's throughout my house.

I have known Darlene for some ten years now...and I would like to share with you a few words about how we met.  I walked up to her tent at a Riverdale Art Show and immediately went to one of her paintings.  As I viewed it I actually cried...it seemed to hit a tender spot, lol

a feeling that I'd been holding back on was released.  Before you knew it we were both hugging and tearing up...a bond was made in such a brief time.

I have purchased a few of her works over the years and each one has brought me to tears for one reason or another.  I treasure her work and appreciate her talent.  A friend has been built on a mutual love of art.  I have actually run out of walls to hang her paintings!!! No exaggeration.

We were very fortunate to meet Darlene Several years ago at an art show in Fenelon Falls.  Her art immediately caught our eye and while we were not planning on buying anything that day, after visiting with Darlene and spending time with her, we of course had to buy our fist significant piece.  That was the start of a friendship that continues today.  Oh, and since that first meeting, we have purchase 7 additional pieces and could not be happier.  The colour and strokes she uses to complete her art is so impressive.  We have received so many accolades from friends and colleagues based on the diversity of our collection.
